Bangalore Mirror Story

When you pay more for a handicraft item, you are contributing towards maintaining a craft and economically supporting an artisan.

Please insist on buying original handicrafts.

Save the art of craft :-)

Lac Jewellery

When we look at a piece of lac jewellery, the last thing we are seeing is lac! The embellished jewellery surface we see is the silver foil shell, which is strengthened by the lac inside.

The real deal: Lac jewellery is not made of lac in the conventional sense; it is rather lac-filled jewellery. Lac, a resinous substance produced by insects, is melted and injected in hollow silver foils.

What makes craft an art?

The thing about craft - unlike other arts - is that anyone can create something. In fact, we all have at sometime at school: you know, that gluing together of paper and glitter.

But there is craft, craft, and then craft. So what makes good craft.

1. Aesthetics - A thing of beauty is a joy forever. The colours, contours, symmetry have to be easy on the eye.

2.History - You will be surprised that there is always some social or political movement behind the emergence of a craft form.

3. Uniqueness - This is what separates the novice from the artisan. Every artisan has a unique style which only he/she can create.

4. Environment - It has to be handmade and made of eco-friendly materials.

Enlightment

At the time of its inception, Simsim was in darkness...literally: the store had no electrical power.

Yes, in the IT City of India we operated with gaslights. And that did not deter our customers. In fact, one regular even remarked that we looked so uncool with running electricity!

Well, as much as we like being different, we too could not manage without power. The power is there. But nothing else has changed - the unconventional timings (open on limited days for limited hours), erratic interior (no shelves), or the tiny stock (more like sample.)

But we have some charming stuff. You have seen Simsim in darkness and now judge it in KEB light.
